About

Helen Kelly

Hi, I’m Helen.

A Multi-Disciplinary Artist & lover of lettering.

WHEN I WAS LITTLE, I prayed for rain so I could make teeny mud birds nests complete with eggs in our front yard. A few years later I was given creative freedom to draw whatever I wanted over my Dad’s upholstery workshop walls.  It was such a great boredom buster and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

During primary school I was inspired by Noelene Morris’s ‘The Lettering Book’, which I still have to this day. During High School I spent many hours practicing Calligraphy. In Year 12 I was awarded a QLD Education Minister’s Award for Excellence in Art for my clay sculpture piece.

Many of my school holidays over the years were spent assisting the family business with small upholstery jobs like sewing // creating fabric covered buttons // job quotes and deliveries. So I can honestly say I’ve been surrounded by fabrics my whole life!

After completing high school I then went on to  study Fine Arts at college including Wheel Throwing, Painting, Photography + Dark Room skills and Art History. 30 years ago I turned my focus to graphic design after receiving my diploma but never stopped creating with several forms of mediums.

I founded Brisbane Hand Lettering in 2015 and run free bi-monthly lettering meet-ups with with several amazing collaborations along the way.

In 2018 I started learning Surface Design. This is where I let my ideas come to life in strokes of colour and pixels of creativity.

You’ll notice that I love to indulge in bold strokes which convey a sense of movement giving a raw and unfiltered quality.

Join me as I push the limits and embrace the extraordinary!
